I'm enamored by our ability to connect globally through social networks and innovative technology. I'm also an advocate of the private and public sector's open dialogue with the general public through traditional and new media.
However... I do feel like we've misplaced some of our discretion. We're so concerned with connecting with other people in one way or another (and... here I am blogging again) that we don't stop and think about what we're actually saying and what the repercussions might be.
Major dailies and even gossip program ET reported the codename secret service agents use for Barack Obama:
"...said Mr. Obama, who has been given the Secret Service nickname Renegade, a way for agents to quickly identify him."
Doesn't it defeat the purpose of a codename if we know to whom you are referring?
Amy Poehler captured it perfectly in Weekend Update this past Thursday:
"The homeland security department said it would not meet a 2012 deadline to scan the contents of every cargo container sent to U.S. Ports."
"'Thanks for the heads-up,' said Terrorists."
And this? Is nothing sacred among close friends, saved to share in the dark at sleepover parties?
